Senior goalkeeper Andrew Weber was named the Brine Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week after shutting out UNLV and allowing just one goal against San Diego State last weekend. Weber’s play has helped the Lobo men’s soccer team take over first place in the MPSF standings and a No. 2 spot in this week’s national rankings. This is the second time this season and the fourth time in his career Weber has earned the MPSF Player of the Week award.
Weber recorded his seventh shutout of the season on Thursday, October 21, when he and the rest of the Lobo defense blanked the UNLV Rebels, 3-0, in Las Vegas, Nev. It was the eighth shutout overall for New Mexico in 2004.
On Sunday, October 24, Weber helped the Lobos preserve a 1-1 tie against San Diego State with some strong play in goal. The tie moved New Mexico (11-1-1, 5-1-1 MPSF) past Denver (8-4-1, 5-2-0 MPSF) for the top spot in the MPSF standings.
Weber is already UNM’s all-time leader in shutouts (23) and goalie wins (44), and he needs just 11 more saves to pass Nate Busek’s (1990-93) career record of 338. With 7,074 career minutes played, he will also threaten Troy Beserra’s (1986-89) career minutes mark of 7,320.
This season, Weber has posted a 0.60 goals-against-average and has only allowed eight goals on the year. His 0.60 g.a.a. leads the MPSF and is the ninth lowest in the NCAA. As a team, the Lobo defense ranks eighth in the NCAA with a 0.59 g.a.a., while their eight shutouts are the third most in the nation.
The Lobos return home on Thursday, October 28, to face Denver at the UNM Soccer Complex at 7:00 p.m. (M.D.T.). New Mexico will be looking to avenge their only loss of the season, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Pioneers on October 17. Weber leads a strong Lobo back line that has not allowed a goal at home this season. New Mexico has also won the last seven matches at the UNM Soccer Complex.
