LAS VEGAS – Top-seeded seniors Ryan Stotland and David Kowalski lasted through three rounds of doubles today at the 2004 Wilson/ITA Mountain Regional Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas to advance to the semifinals tomorrow. The 24th-ranked duo earned a bye in the first round.
The duo cruised to an 8-3 win over Montana’s Mascall and Treyz in the Second Round before UNLV’s Nehles and Saloman withdrew from their Round of 16 match. In the quarterfinals, Kowalski and Stotland downed Boise State’s Jobe and Silva, 9-7.
In other doubles action, the freshmen tandem of Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski netted an 8-4 win over Utah State’s Bouton and Schenk in the First Round and an 8-5 victory over BYU’s Das and Hand in the Second Round. The duo met their match in the Round of 16, falling 8-4 to Montana State’s Gebicki and Olson, the tournament’s second seed. The team of junior Eric Conklin and freshman Derek Lynch fell in the First Round, 9-7, to Montana’s Girl and Wing.
Stotland, the only Lobo still alive in the singles draw, was eliminated from competition in the Round of 16. Montana State’s Federico Ueltschi, the third seed, defeated Stotland, the ninth seed, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(9).
Over 120 players from 16 teams have entered the regionals, which wraps up Sunday with the singles championship and the semifinals and finals of the doubles.
