LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Senior Ryan Stotland is the only University of New Mexico tennis player left in the hunt for the Mountain Regional singles title at the 2004 Wilson/ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. Stotland has worked his way through the quarterfinals and will compete in the semis tomorrow at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Stotland’s path to the semifinals started in the second round with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Boise State’s Eric Roberson. In the third round, Stotland outlasted Utah’s Zach Granger, 6-4, 7-6 (6). In the quarterfinals, ninth-seeded Stotland ousted eighth-seeded Jan Zelezny of Colorado, 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman Max Jones’ impressive run came to a tragic end in the quarterfinals with a three-set loss (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) to Boise State’s Luke Shields, the tournament’s fourth seed. Jones advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over Weber State’s Martin Sitek (6-1, 6-1) and BYU’s Chip Hand (6-3, 3-6, 6-3), respectively.
Sixth-seeded senior David Kowalski cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Montana State’s Jake Berriochoa in his first match of the tournament. Kowlaski retired from his third-round match against Nima Roshan with the score 6-3, 4-1.
In the second round, junior Eric Conklin fell to Zelezny, 6-2, 6-1 while freshman Derek Lynch was bested by UNLV’s Aviram Salomon, 6-1, 6-0. In the singles consolation bracket, freshman Kamil Pajkowski netted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Weber State’s Mathis Saberon.
More than 120 players from 16 teams have gathered for the event, which runs through Sunday.
