LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The highly irregular rains that hit the Las Vegas, Nev. area over the last two days finally held off long enough to allow one round of the 2004 Wilson/ITA Mountain Regional Men’s Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex to finish Thursday evening. Junior Eric Conklin and freshman Derek Lynch both earned wins in the opening round.
Conklin needed three sets to advance over Idaho’s Robert Chaldey, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Lynch battled with Chad Robbins of Utah, besting him 6-3, 7-6. Freshman Kamil Pajkowski fell to 27th-seeded Miron Mann of Utah, 6-4, 6-2.
Seniors David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland, seeded sixth and ninth, respectively, earned opening round byes. Also earning a bye was freshman Max Jones, seeded 14th.
More than 120 players from 16 teams have gathered for the event,which runs through Sunday.
