Pacific Palisades, Calif.– The New Mexico doubles team of junior Maja Kovacek and sophomore Iva Gersic ended their run today in the main doubles draw of the Riviera/ITA Tennis Championships as they fell in a close semifinal match to No. 7 Catrina Thomoson and Christian Thompson of Notre Dame, 9-8. Despite the loss, the No. 11 UNM tandem claimed a berth into the ITA’s next big national event. Kovacek and Gersic will compete as a doubles team at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. held Nov. 4-7.

Last year, Kovacek and former Lobo player, Sandy Lukowski, won the entire doubles draw at the Indoor championships for the first time ever in UNM women’s tennis history. This season, Kovacek and Gersic hope to keep the tradition alive.

“I’m really proud of the girls,” said UNM head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz. “They certainly put New Mexico on the map, nationally. The biggest thing about this weekend is that we got a berth into the ITA Indoor Championships.”
