COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
New Mexico senior Kailin Downs was named Mountain West Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month for September after posting a 72.3 stroke average through two tournaments and recording par or better scores in five of six rounds played.

Downs started the fall season with a third-place finish at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational on the UNM Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M. She carded three straight rounds under par for a 54-hole total of four-under 215 (72-72-71) on the par 73, 6,993-yard course. As a team, the Lobos placed second behind second-ranked Georgia.

At the NCAA Fall Preview, an annual tournament featuring the top teams in the country, held on the Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore., Downs tied for 24th out of 104 participants and led New Mexico to an eighth-place finish in the field of 21 teams. She posted even-par rounds of 71 through the first 36 holes, followed by a 77 on the final 18 holes to conclude the tournament with a six-over 219.

This marks the sixth time in her career that Downs has been named the Mountain West Golfer of the Month. She earned the award twice last year, twice as a sophomore and once as a freshman.

The New Mexico women’s golf team returns to action next weekend (Sept. 15-17) for the Stanford/Pepsi Invitational.
