CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Senior Ryan Stotland and freshman Max Jones fought through their first round matches to advance in the ICY HOT/ITA All-American Prequalification Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. today.
Stotland, a 17th seed in the tournament, earned a bye in the round of 256 before taking on Mississippi’s Juan Pablo DiCesare in the round of 128. Stotland fell in the first set, 3-6, but battled back to take the last two, 6-3, 6-4. He will face Jose Orozco, a 33rd seed from Western Michigan, at 9 a.m. ET in the round of 64.
Jones struggled in his opening set versus Vanderbilt’s Evan Dufuax, falling 6-7 but stormed back to take the final two sets 6-2, 6-3. In the round of 128, Jones cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Minnesota’s D.J. Gaetz. He will face top-seeded Matt Simpson of Arkansas tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET.
Freshman Kamil Pajkowski also competed in today’s competition, drawing a bye in the opening round. He came out strong, taking his first set against Santa Clara’s Jan Macek, 6-3, but couldn’t hold on, falling 6-3, 6-0 in the final sets.
