WACO, Texas – It was a successful day at the HEB Baylor Intercollegiate for the New Mexico men’s tennis team, as the Lobos have men still in the hunt for tournament titles in each flight. In the Gold Flight, senior Ryan Stotland is still alive while junior Eric Conklin continues to advance in the Green Flight. The tandems of Stotland and classmate David Kowalski and freshman Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski continue to battle in the Gold Doubles Flight.
Stotland had a monumental performance this morning in singles, ousting the tournament’s top-seeded player, Conor Taylor of North Carolina State, 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 32. He cruised past Wichita State’s Moti Eisikovits, 6-2, 6-3, in his opening match. Stotland will take on Colorado’s Marko Bundao in the round of sixteen tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT.
Conklin battled in the opening set of his first match versus Elliot Quibell of Colorado, winning 7-5 and clinched the win with a 6-1 second set. He advanced to the quarterfinals after his 7-5, 6-1 win over UT-Pan American’s Rehman Esmail in the round of 16. Conklin will face Ian Vazquez-Rowe of UT-Arlington at 10 a.m.
Both the teams of Stotland/Kowalski and Jones/Pajkowski earned byes in the round of 64. Stotland and Kowalski netted an 8-3 win over Esmail and Jeremy Salvo whlie Jones and Pajkowski downed Lamar’s Juan Pablo Alatorre and Emilio Kirby, 8-3. Jones and Pajkowski will square off against TCU’s Jacob Martin and Andrew Ulrich while Stotland and Kowalski take on UT-Arlington’s Niels Buksik and Sandy Farquharson. Both matches commence at 4 p.m.
Also playing tomorrow in the Gold Consolation Round, Kowalski will face Martin and Jones matches up with Louisiana-Lafayette’s Shaun Ellison at 8 a.m.
