Albuquerque, N.M.– Sophomore Iva Gersic won her third round match in the qualifying portion of the ColemanVision Tennis Championships Tuesday afternoon at the Albuquerque Tanoan Country Club. Gersic will play in the singles main draw on Wednesday against No. 359 Stephanie Dubois of Canada at 10 a.m.

For the third qualifying round match, Gersic was down 6-2, 3 love before coming back to defeat No. 791 Arpi Kojan 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. She is the first UNM women’s tennis player to make it to the singles main draw of the ColemanVision Championships.

In other New Mexico tennis news, the University of New Mexico women’s tennis team travels to Provo, Utah this Thursday, Sept. 23 for the annual BYU Fall Invitational. UNM will compete against host BYU, University of Denver, Colorado State, Boise State, Utah, Utah State and Weber for the three-day event. The Invite starts Thursday at 9 a.m. (MDT) and continues to the finals on Saturday.

UNM returns to tennis action this year with two seniors, one junior, four sophomores and two newcomers. Freshmen Jennifer Ryba (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Lucy Scott (Wretham, Wales) are talented players who will look to help the Lobos have another successful year.
