No. 10 Lobo Women’s Golf In Fourth Place At NCAA Preview

The 10th-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team took advantage of a familiar course and shot a 3-over 287 Monday afternoon to stand in fourth place at the prestigious NCAA Fall Preview after one round. The tournament is being held at the Meadows Course on the Sunriver Resort, site of the past four Mountain West Conference championships and the 2005 NCAA Championships. The loaded 21-team field features 16 ranked teams, including nine in the top 10. The Lobos are four shots back of No. 3 Duke, who shot a 1-under 283 as a team.

Junior Christine Fernandez carded the best round of the day for UNM, firing a 3-under 68, which tied her previous best round as a Lobo. Fernandez tallied six birdies on the day and is in a tie for third place, four shots off the pace set by Duke’s Brittany Lang, who shot a 7-under 64.

Senior Kailin Downs is in a tie for 14th place after shooting an even-par 71. Sophomore Ashley Rollins and senior Christina Spence both carded a 3-over 74 and are tied for 33rd. Playing in the starting lineup for the first time in her career, freshman Alexandra Phelps carded a 12-over 83.
