LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Senior David Kowalski and freshman Max Jones are still in the hunt for the singles crown at the New Mexico State Invitational after two rounds of competition. Kowalski and classmate Ryan Stotland also charged through the first two rounds in doubles during day one.
Opening the tournament yesterday, Kowalski sat idle with a first round bye as the second seed before netting a 6-1, 6-2 win in the Round of 16 over the Aggies’ Christian Halligan. Jones, in his first performance as a Lobo, battled for a three-set win (3-6, 7-5, 6-4) over Abilene Christian’s Will McDonald in the Round of 32. Jones settled down for a 6-3, 6-4 win in the next round over Casper Steenkamp of ACU.
Stotland and freshman Kamil Pajkowski also earned singles wins in the Round of 32. Stotland blanked AJ Smith of ACU, 6-0, 6-0 while Pajkowski took Luis Ramirez to three sets for a 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 win. The College of Santa Fe’s Ivan Angulo got the best of Stotland (6-4, 7-5) and ACU’s Artin Tafuzoli beat Pajkowski 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16.
In doubles, top-seeded Kowalski and Stotland earned a first round bye before earning a 7-2 win over CSF’s Ramirez and Daniel Scholten in the quarterfinals. Jones and Pajkowski cruised to an 8-0 win over ACU’s McDonald and Smith in the Round of 16 but lost in the quarterfinals to CSF’s Angulo and Omana.
Kowalski will take on Scholten in the quarterfinals today while Jones will square off against top-seeded Danilo Zivanovic of New Mexico State. The tandem of Kowalski and Stotland will face ACU’s Jacon Ray and Steenkamp in the semifinals.
