The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team earned its highest ever national ranking today when Soccer America magazine placed the Lobos 14th in its weekly top-25 poll. New Mexico’s previous high was 15th, also in the Soccer America top-25, in the 1997 season.
The Lobos (4-0-0) have impressive wins this season over Delaware, Loyola Marymount, Cal State Northridge and No. 13 Virginia Commonwealth. New Mexico is set to host one of the top tournaments of the year with this weekend’s adidas/Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational at the UNM Soccer Complex.
Three of the four teams participating are undefeated and ranked in the top-15. Action begins on Saturday, September 18, at 5:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) with No. 3 UC-Santa Barbara (4-0-0) taking on No. 1 Indiana (4-0-0). The Lobos will follow with a match against Columbia (1-2-1) at 7:00 p.m. Saturday night is “Stuff the Stadium” with all tickets going for $1.00. Sunday’s games begin at 5:00 p.m. with the Gauchos facing off against Columbia. New Mexico will then host the top-ranked and defending NCAA Champion Hoosiers at 7:00 p.m. It will mark the first time the Lobos have hosted a No. 1 ranked team in school history.
