ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The 10th-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team shaved three strokes off No. 2 Georgia’s five-stroke lead Tuesday afternoon in the second round of the 26th annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, and only trail the Bulldogs by two strokes heading into Wednesday’s final round. The Lobos are seeking a tournament-record fourth consecutive McGuire Invitational title. Georgia is 2-over (287-299–586) for the tournament, while the Lobos are 4-over (292-296–588). BYU is in third at 296-295–591 (+7).

Individually, Kailin Downs moved up from seventh to fourth with a 1-under 72 in the second round. She is 2-under (72-72–144) for the tournament. Downs, who won medalist honors at the McGuire last season, trails leader Karin Sjodin of Oklahoma State by four strokes. Christine Fernandez is also in the top 10, in a tie for eighth, with an even-par 72-74–146.

Senior Christina Spence jumped into the top 20 with a 1-over 74 on Tuesday; she is 4-over for the tournament at 76-74–150. Sophomore Ashley Rollins is in a tie for 26th at 5-over (75-76–151) while Giselle Claux is in a tie for 72nd at 13-over (73-86–159). Freshman Alexandra Phelps, playing as an individual, is tied for 53rd at 9-over (75-80–155).

The third and final round of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational will be held tomorrow (Wednesday, Sept. 15) at the UNM Championship Course. All players will tee off at 8 a.m.
