Up Next: The 19th ranked University of New Mexico men’s soccer team travels to Northridge, Calif., for the Matador Soccer Invitational at Cal State Northridge this weekend. The Lobos will face Loyola Marymount on Friday, September 10, at 2:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) and Cal State Northridge on Sunday, September 12, at 1:30 p.m. (M.D.T.).

National Player of the Week: Junior Jeff Rowland was named CollegeSoccerNews.com’s National Player of the Week following his play last weekend. Rowland scored all five of the Lobos’ goals in the opening weekend. He also earned the MVP of the Nike/ALLTELL Classic at Richmond, Va. His five goals and 10 points lead the MPSF after the first weekend of play.
Making a Mark: Senior Hans Bevers came off the bench to notch a pair of assists in the Lobos’ wins over Delaware and No. 13 VCU last weekend. He also was taken down in the box twice, resulting in a pair of penalty kicks.
All-Tournament: Three Lobos earned all-tournament honors to go along with Rowland’s MVP honors, including Bevers, senior Andrew Weber and junior Ben Ashwill.
Big Win: The Lobos defeated No. 13 VCU on Sunday to win the Nike/ALLTELL Classic in Richmond, Va., last weekend. It was the second straight win for New Mexico over a ranked team and their biggest win since defeating No. 2 SMU, 5-2, on October 26, 1997.
Good Start to 2004: The Lobos start the season 2-0-0 for the second time in three years and the 11th time in school history.
Lobos Down No. 7 SMU in First Exhibition: The Lobos’ exhibition match with No. 7 SMU on Saturday, Aug. 21, in Houston, Texas, ended in a 0-0 tie. The coaches decided to end the game with penalty kicks instead of the regular overtime periods, and the Lobos won the shoot-out, 4-3. Senior keeper Andrew Weber stopped the Mustangs’ fifth attempt, allowing junior Brandon Moss to step in and win the game on the Lobos’ final kick.
In The Rankings: The Lobos are currently ranked 19th in the Soccer America top-25 and 22nd in the CollegeSoccerNews.com top-30. It marks the third consecutive season UNM has been ranked in the top-25 in at least one of the four major college soccer polls. The Lobos highest ranking came in 1997 when they reached No. 15 in the Soccer America top-25. New Mexico is 12-8-2 all-time when ranked in the top-30. Both the Lobos and Cal State Northridge are ranked ninth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Far West region.

Moving Up The Ranks: Head coach Jeremy Fishbein needs three more wins to become the second winningest coach in UNM history. He currently holds a 28-13-3 mark and is about to pass Craig Robertson (31-12-3) who coached the Lobos from 1983-85. Klaus Weber holds the all-time high with a 157-127-8 record in 15 years at the helm of Lobo soccer.
Weber Logging Minutes: Senior keeper Andrew Weber is moving up the Lobos’ all-time chart for minutes played. He currently sits in sixth place with 6,069 minutes, behind David Metzler (1987-90) who played 6,226 minutes in his career. Troy Besera (1986-89) hold the all-time record with 7,320 minutes played.

adidas/Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational: Be sure to mark your calendar for the upcoming adidas/Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational on September 18-19 at the UNM Soccer Complex. No. 12 UC-Santa Barbara faces off against No. 1 Indiana in the opening match on Saturday, September 18, at 5:00 p.m. (M.D.T.). The Lobos go against Columbia in the second game on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. (M.D.T.). Saturday is “Stuff the Stadium” night with all tickets for both games going for $1.00. The 12th ranked Gauchos will take on Columbia on Sunday, September 19, at 5:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) to start the second day of action.
