Up Next: The 28th ranked University of New Mexico men’s soccer team travels to Richmond, Va., this week to participate in the Nike/ALLTELL Classic at Virginia Commonwealth University. The Lobos will open the 2004 season with a match against Delaware on Friday, September 3, at 3:30 p.m. (M.D.T.). New Mexico will then face No. 13 VCU on Sunday, September 5, at 11:00 a.m. (M.D.T.).

Helmus Matute, Hugh MacDonald and Evan Morris have all scored for VCU in the preseason. Senior defender Gonzalo Segares is a 3rd-team preseason All-American selection by CollegeSoccerNews.com.

UNM In Season Openers: The Lobos have won three straight season openers, with all three games being played on a neutral field. The last time the Lobos were defeated in a season opener was a, 2-0, loss to Notre Dame to start the 2000 season. The Lobos have not opened the season at home since the 1997 season.

New Mexico and the Rankings: UNM is 8-26-0 all-time against ranked teams, but they did defeat No. 25 San Jose State, 1-0, on October 31, 2003, in their last match against a ranked team. UNM is 7-5-0 as a ranked team.

Teacher vs. Pupil: Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein will face his collegiate coach when the New Mexico plays VCU on Sunday, Sept. 5. Rams head man, Tim O’Sullivan, coached Fishbein when he played for the University of Richmond from 1984-85.

New Mexico Defeats Fort Lewis in Exhibition: Freshman Blake Danaher scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute off an assist from junior Cody Hanna and sophomore Andrew Boyens to give the Lobos a, 1-0, win over Fort Lewis in exhibition play on Saturday, Aug. 28. New Mexico controlled the pace of play, out-shooting the Skyhawks 14-4, despite only finding the back of the net once in the game.

Lobos Down No. 7 SMU in Preseason Exhibition: The Lobos’ exhibition match with No. 7 SMU on Saturday, Aug. 21, in Houston, Texas, ended in a 0-0 tie. The coaches decided to end the game with penalty kicks instead of the regular overtime periods, and the Lobos won the shoot-out, 4-3. Senior keeper Andrew Weber stopped the Mustangs’ fifth attempt, allowing junior Brandon Moss to step in and win the game on the Lobos’ final kick.

Ashwill Named Academic All-American: Sophomore Ben Ashwill earned the first Academic All-American honor for a Lobo since 1994. His 3.90 g.p.a. made him the fourth Lobo in school history to earn Academic All-American honors.

All-Far West Region: Sophomore Brandon Moss earned a spot on the 2003 All-Far West Region 2nd Team. He is the ninth player in school history to earn a spot on an all-district team and the fourth in the last two years.

Academic All-District: The Lobos placed an amazing six players on the 2003 District VI All-Academic team. Lance Watson, Brandon Moss, Ben Ashwill, Jeff Rowland, Eric Carlson, and Matt Wootton were all named to the team.

All-MPSF: Five Lobos earned All-MPSF honors in 2003:Brandon Moss – 1st Team (2002 2nd Team)

MPSF All-Tournament: Three Lobos were named to the 2003 MPSF All-Tournament team, including Brandon Moss, Jeff Krause, and Pat Grange.

National Team-of-the-Week: Sophomore Brandon Moss was named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team-of-the-Week for the week ending November 2, 2003.

MPSF Player-of-the-Week: A pair of Lobos earned the Brine MPSF Player-of-the-Week award in 2003. Andrew Weber won the award on November 3, while Jeff Rowland received the honor for the week ending November 10.
