The 2004 University of New Mexico football team captains as chosen by their teammates are senior OT Claude Terrell (LaMarque, Texas) and junior TB DonTrell Moore (Roswell, N.M.) on offense and senior S Josh Bazinet (Albuquerque) and senior LB Nick Speegle (Albuquerque) on defense.
While captains have been chosen in a variety of ways throughout the history of Lobo football – preseason, appointed by game and after the season – this is the first year that at least three captains have hailed from the state of New Mexico.
A third team All-America pick last year and a preseason All-America selection this season, Terrell has played in 38 career games with 37 consecutive starts entering the 2004 campaign. A three-year starter at offensive guard, Terrell has switched to tackle for his senior year.
Moore rewrote the UNM record book last season, rushing for 1,450 yards and scoring 21 TDs. A two-time first team all-league selection, Moore begins the 2004 season needing just 246 yards to become the career rushing leader in the Mountain West Conference. He needs 1,279 yards to break the UNM career rushing mark of 3,862 yards currently held by Mike Williams (1975-78).
Bazinet is the sixth former walk-on in the past five years to be chosen as a team captain, joining Jarrod Baxter (2000-01), Terrell Golden (2003), Brian Johnson (2001), Casey Kelly (2002-03) and Mohammed Konte (2001). Awarded a scholarship prior to the 2002 season, Bazinet has played in 38 career games and has been voted UNM’s special teams player of the year each of the past two seasons.
Speegle is a two-time honorable mention all-Mountain West Conference performer at outside linebacker. He has played in 38 games with 31 starts – including 30 in a row – and has posted 225 career tackles, tops among all current Lobos. Speegle earned his bachelor’s degree in May in just four years, compiling a 3.96 cumulative GPA. He begins classes towards his MBA this fall.
