SOUTH HAMPTON, N.Y. – Spencer Levin of the University of New Mexico men’s golf team closed out the grueling 72-holes of the U.S. Open in a tie for 13th place. Levin shot a 5-over par round of 75 in the final round, on the par-70, 6996 yard Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in South Hampton, N.Y., and finished at 8-over par (69-73-71-75=288) for the tournament. Levin’s 5-over par 75 was tied for the 12th best round of the day as only 11 players shot 74 or better. Levin also was the low amateur of the U.S. Open with the best finish by an amateur since 1971. Levin also qualified for the 2005 U.S. Open at Pinehurst with his top 15 finish.

Levin shot a 39 on the opening nine with a birdie on 6 and bogeys on 1, 5, 7, 8 and 9. On the second nine Levin bogeyed 13 and 17, birdied 16 and was even over the remaining six holes to shoot a 36.

The 104th U.S. Open champion at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was Retief Goosen ,who finished at 4-under par.
