SOUTH HAMPTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Spencer Levin of the University of New Mexico men’s golf team grinded his way through the second round and made the cut in a tie for 23rd place. Levin shot a 3-over par round of 73 on the par-70, 6996 yard Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in South Hampton, N.Y., and is currently 2-over par (69-73=142) for the tournament. Levin is tied with Casey Wittenberg as the top amateur, with only four amateurs making the cut.
Levin shot a 34 on the opening nine with birdies on 15, 16 and 17 and bogies on 13 and 14. On the second nine Levin bogeyed 4, 6, 8 and 9 and was even over the other five holes to shoot a 39.
The second round leaders at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club are Phil Mickelson and Shigeki Maruyama who are both at 6-under.
