SOUTH HAMPTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Spencer Levin of the University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished his first round of the 104th U.S. Open in a tie for 12th place, when play was suspended Thursday. Levin shot a 1-under round of 69 on the par-70, 6996 yard Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in South Hampton, N.Y. The highlight of the U.S. Open on the first day was a hole in one on the 179 yard 17th by Levin.

Levin shot a 36 on the opening nine with eight pars and a bogey on four. On the back nine Levin bogeyed 13, 14 and 15, while recording birdies on 11, 12 and 16 along with the eagle on 17 to shoot a 33.

The opening round leaders at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club are Jay Haas and Shigeki Maruyama who are both at 4-under.

Levin is scheduled to tee off on Friday on the 10th hole at 5:10 AM (MST).
