SAN DIEGO, Calif.– The No. 30 UNM women’s tennis team will take center stage in its first-ever final round appearance at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championship after sweeping No. 4-seeded host San Diego State 4-0 this afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
The powerhouse duo of senior Sandy Lukowski and sophomore Maja Kovacek maintained winning form at No. 1 doubles as they defeated Indra Erichsen and Katalina Romero 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, senior Maria Ruiz-Fabrega and freshman Iva Gersic beat Dita Hauerlandova and Aleysa Vidov 8-4, to clinch the doubles point.
In singles action, Heidbrink, Lukowski and senior Tjasa Suvak captured victories at the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots. Matches at No. 1, 2 and 3 were not completed after UNM earned the fourth point needed to win.
UNM (20-3) will face No. 2-seeded BYU for the conference tournament title tomorrow at the Barnes Tennis Center at 1 p.m. (MDT).
