San Diego, Calif. – Sophomore Maja Kovacek became the first Lobo to be named Mountain West Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year on Wednesday night at the 2004 MWC women’s tennis award banquet in San Diego, Calif. Kovacek, the 75th-ranked player in the nation, has a 21-10 overall record on the season (14-6 in dual matches) and finished MWC play with a record of 5-1 at the No. 1 singles position.

Other MWC honors included three singles players and two doubles teams earning all-conference recognition. Kovacek, freshman Iva Gersic and junior Michelle Heidbrink were honored on the All-MWC singles team while the duos of Kovacek and senior Sandy Lukowksi and Gersic and senior Maria Ruiz-Fabrega earned All-MWC doubles team honors respectively. For Lukowski, it is the fourth time in her career she has earned all-conference honors as part of a doubles team. Kovacek, meanwhile, was a repeat singles and doubles selection. Heidbrink and Ruiz-Fabrega were honored for the first time in their careers.

The No. 30 Lobo women’s tennis team is in San Diego this week competing in the 2004 MWC Championships. No. 1-seeded UNM plays eighth seed Air Force today at 2 p.m. (P.D.T.) at the Barnes Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State University.
