BEND, Ore. –
The fifth-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team began its quest for a fifth straight Mountain West title this afternoon at the 2004 Mountain West Golf Championships, and after one round of action at the par-71 Meadows Course, it sits in second place behind No. 20 UNLV. The Rebels shot a 5-over 289 for the day, two strokes better than UNM, who carded a 7-over 291.
Individually, senior Katrina Leckovic – who claimed medalist honors at last year’s championships – is tied for second with a 1-under 70, trailing leader Elena Kurokawa of UNLV by only two strokes. Junior Shannon Johnson also turned in a nice round, carding an even-par 71.
Sophomore Christine Fernandez and freshman Ashley Rollins each shot a 4-over 75 to sit in a tie for 11th. Two-time Mountain West Golfer of the Year Kailin Downs struggled in her first round with a 7-over 78, good for a tie in 23rd place.
The Mountain West Women’s Golf Championship resumes tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. The final round of the tournament is set for Saturday at 10 a.m. Live stats of the tournament are available at www.TheMWC.com and www.GolfStat.com.
