Official statement from the NCAA
INDIANAPOLIS – The national office reinstatement staff, on behalf of the Division I Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee, announced today that it has granted University of New Mexico kicker Katie Hnida a waiver and an extension of her five-year clock for the 2004-05 football season. The waiver of NCAA Bylaw 14.2.1 will permit Hnida to participate in NCAA athletics next season, technically her sixth year of eligibility.
Katie Hnida Bio
* Hnida is a 1999 graduate of Littleton (Colo.) Chatfield High School…she spent three years on the varsity football team, making 4 of 5 FGs and 83 of 87 extra points in her prep career…longest field goal was 35 yards…earned honorable mention all-Jefferson County honors as a senior when she hit 3-3 FGs and 27-of-28 PATs…also voted homecoming queen that year and participated in the halftime ceremony wearing her uniform…lettered two years in track (400 meters and pole vault) and played one year of junior varsity soccer
* Came to UNM in August of 2002 as a walk-on
* Became the first woman to participate in an NCAA Div. I-A football game when she attempted an extra point against UCLA in the 2002 Las Vegas Bowl (Dec. 25)…the kick was blocked
* Became the first woman to score in an NCAA Div. I-A game when she converted both of her extra-point attempts against Texas State-San Marcos, a 72-8 Lobo victory on Aug. 30, 2003
* Excepted to graduate from the University of New Mexico in December of 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in History and Psychology
