“Read with the Lobos” starts the Spring Session of its 12th year in March 2004, with a 6-week reading incentive program in middle and elementary schools throughout Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and surrounding school districts. During the Fall 2003 six-week session of Read with the Lobos, 22,800 books were read by 2,461 students from 42 different schools – the aim of the program is to encourage more students to become acquainted with books and enjoy reading.
Read with the Lobos rewards students for their reading efforts with tickets to Lobo athletic events, including football, women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball. Assemblies can be held at many of the participating schools, which enable UNM student-athletes, staff and coaches to reach the community and bring the program directly into the schools, to promote reading and encourage academic endeavors.
Sponsors are extremely important to the continuance of this valuable community program by providing financial support, attending school assemblies and donating premium prizes for top readers.
