Honolulu, Hawaii– The No. 26 University of New Mexico women’s tennis squad kept its winning momentum alive on the islands as they scraped by No. 49 Washington State, 4-3, today in Hawaii. The Lobos improve their record to 11-2 on the season.
In doubles action, UNM earned the doubles point with two victories. At No. 1 doubles, the unstoppable force of senior Sandy Lukowski and sophomore Maja Kovacek battled their way to a 9-7 victory over Orsolya Sallai and Chris Martinez. The second victory of the day came at No. 3 doubles where juniors Michelle Heidbrink and Tiffany Robertson defeated WSU’s Amy Toth and Nora Gaal, 8-3. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Iva Gersic and senior Maria Ruiz-Fabrega marked their first loss on the season, falling to Lorena Arias and Zsofia Fodor, 8-5.
In singles action, UNM split the singles victories, winning three of the six. At No. 1 singles, Kovacek gained a win for UNM, beating Orsolya Sallai, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Gersic fell to Arias, 6-2, 6-3 while at No. 3 singles, Robertson was unable to defeat Gaal in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). Rounding out the losses for UNM was Lukowski at No. 4 singles. WSU’s Martinez beat the Lobo 6-2, 6-1. The No. 5 and No. 6 spots of the singles matches for UNM bounced back with two more wins. Heidbrink collected a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Fodor while senior Tjasa Suvak defeated Toth, 6-2, 7-6.
The Lobos end their spring break matches in Hawaii, Thursday, March 18 when they face No. 62 San Diego at 1 p.m.
