After defeating two ranked teams over the past weekend, the University of New Mexico women’s tennis team has moved up from a No. 28 to a No. 27 national ranking accorrding to the I.T.A. polls released today. The UNM squad also features one singles player and two doubles teams on the national rankings list.

Sophomore Maja Kovacek climbed the rankings ladder higher this week, marking in at a No. 43 national spot. The Pula, Croatia native improved on her previous No. 57 national ranking after a solid weekend of tennis at No. 1 singles.Kovacek is the highest ranked singles player in the Mountain West Conference.

The doubles team of Kovacek and senior Sandy Lukowski moved up a notch in the polls with a No. 20 national ranking, making the duo the highest ranked doubles team in the MWC. UNM’s No. 2 tandem of freshman Iva Gersic and senior Maria Ruiz-Fabrega made their national ranking debut at No. 47 this week.

The No. 27 Lobos are the second highest ranked team in the MWC, following No. 21 BYU. The women’s tennis team takes to the courts in Hawaii next Monday, March 15, to face Rainbow Wahine at 9 a.m.
