ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.– The No. 28 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team topped off its weekend home matches with a 5-2 win over No. 48 Colorado this afternoon at the Lobo Tennis Club. The Lobos improve to 9-2 on the season as they enter the week to prepare for upcoming matches in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The UNM doubles teams were stronger than ever as each captured victories. At No. 1 doubles, No. 21 Maja Kovacek and Sandy Lukowski edged out the duo of Morgan Sall and Jessica Vanderdys, 8-5 while at no. 2 doubles, the Lobo tandem of Maria Ruiz-Fabrega and Iva Gersic dominated CU’s Lynzee Kever and Kendra Strandemo, 8-1. At No. 3 doubles, Michelle Heidbrink and Tiffany Robertson gained a win with an 8-2 victory over Colorado’s Martina Sedivec and Jenny Hanson.
The Lobos then went on to earn four singles wins out of six to take the win against Colorado. At No. 2 singles, freshman Gersic controlled the game against CU’s Strandemo as she defeated the Buffalo junior in two sets (6-1, 6-1). UNM’s Robertson battled at the No. 3 spot, defeating Vanderdys, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 while Lukowski captured a win at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sedivec. Earning the last singles point for UNM was Heidbrink with a solid 6-3, 6-1 victory over CU’s Kristy Randono. UNM’s losses came at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions as Kovacek fell to Kever, 6-3, 6-0 and Tjasa Suvak fell to Sall, 7-6, 4-6 (10-7).
The Lobos travel to Honolulu, Hawaii in one week for three dual-matches. UNM is set to compete against Hawaii Monday, March 15, Washington State Tuesday, March 16 and San Diego Thursday, March 18. All matches are set to start at 9 a.m.
