ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The No. 32 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team continued to dominate on the courts as they defeated Houston 7-0 this evening at the Lobo Tennis Club. The victory is the second for the Lobos this weekend and the third home win on the season.
In doubles action, UNM clinched the doubles point with three victories. At the No. 1 position, senior Sandy Lukowski and sophomore Maja Kovacek battled to victory over the doubles pair of Biljana Dimovska and Miranda Foley, 8-5. The duo of Iva Gersic and Maria Ruiz-Fabrega, who played at the No. 2 spot, were also vicotrious, beating the Houston duo of Karine Urbin and Diana Martin , 8-0. Rounding out doubles competition at the third spot were Tiffany Robertson and Michelle Heidbrink with an 8-3 win over Yolandi Terblanche and Kami Miller.
The toughest win of the dual-match came at the No. 1 singles spot where Kovacek battled hard for the final singles point of the night. The Lobo sophomore went to a 10 point match tie breaker with Houston’s Dimovska and won 6-4, 6-7, 1-0(11-9). Gersic struggled with an injured ankel during her match-up with Foley at the No. 2 spot, but was able to draw a solid 6-4, 6-4 win. At the No. 3 position, Robertson added a point with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Terblanche while Lukowksi earned a clear 6-2, 6-0 win over Martin at No. 4 singles. Heidbrink brought power to her game as she dominated Houston’s Miller 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Senior Tjasa Suvak also showed winning form with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Urbin at the No. 6 singles spot.
The Lobos are at home again next weekend when they face No. 57 Boise State, Friday, March 5 at 4 p.m. and No. 49 Colorado, Sunday, March 7 at noon.
