Colorado Springs, Colo.– Lobo sophomore tennis player Maja Kovacek has received the MWC’s Player of the Week honor after leading the previously 51st-ranked UNM tennis squad to two upset victories over then- No. 28 Oklahoma and then- No. 49 Tulsa last weekend. Kovacek went 2-0 in singles and doubles competition. The honor is the first for Kovacek this season and the third recognition for UNM.

Against the Sooners, Kovacek (Pula, Croatia) defeated No. 76 Irina Lykina at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, and teamed with Sandy Lukowski to beat Anda Perianu and Heather Saluri, 8-4, at No, 1 doubles. In UNM’s 5-2 win over Tulsa, Kovacek was victorious over Donata Majauskaite at No. 2 singles position, 6-1, 6-2. She also teamed with Lukowksi to beat Daniela Muscolino and Ilona Somers at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Kovacek is 12-6 overall this season (5-2 dual), earning her a No. 57 national ranking in singles play. Along with Lukowski, she is 15-6 overall (5-2 dual) in doubles. The powerful tandem are ranked No. 16 in the nation for doubles.

The No. 32 UNM tennis team are at home this weekend to host No. 70 Wisconsin, Saturday, Feb. 28 at noon and Houston, Sunday, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Lobo Tennis Club.
