Tulsa, Okla. – After a big win over No. 28 Oklahoma, Saturday evening, the UNM women’s tennis squad came back Sunday afternoon to end its weekend road trip with a 5-2 victory over No. 49 Tulsa, improving its record to 5-2 on the season.
In singles action, sophomore Maja Kovacek continued her winning momentum at the No. 2 singles spot, defeating Donata Majauskaite, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 4 singles, junior Tiffany Robertson added a point for UNM with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tulsa’s Santie Delport while junior Michelle Heidbrink captured a win at No. 5 singles, beating Timberly Greenly, 6-2, 6-2. Clinching the last singles point at No. 6 singles was senior Tjasa Suvak. She defeated Lisette Pereira in two quick sets (6-1, 6-1).
UNM swept the doubles round for the final point of the day. At the No. 1 doubles position, Kovacek and senior Sandy Lukowski defeated Daniela Muscolino and Ilona Somers, 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Iva Gersic and senior Maria Ruiz-Fabrega garnered a win against Tulsa’s Delport and Majauskaite, 8-1 while at No. 3, Hedbrink and Robertson defeated Kindsay Grimes and Pereira, 8-6.
The Lobos return to tennis action next weekend at the Lobo Tennis Club when they host Wisconsin Saturday, Feb. 28 at noon and Houston Sunday, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m.
