The sixth-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team shot a 299 (+15) to stand in second place after one round of competition at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Monday afternoon (Feb. 9). No. 2 UCLA leads the field, which features 12 ranked teams including seven in the top 10, with a score of 286 (+2).
Junior Kailin Downs (Bend, Ore.) is in second place after firing a 1-under 70 (35-35) in the first round. Downs had three birdies and 13 pars to stay within four shots of leader Charlotte Mayorkas (UCLA), who shot a 5-under 66.
Senior Katrina Leckovic (Burnaby, British Columbia) shot a 4-over 75 (38-37) and is in a tie for 18th, while junior Shannon Johnson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) is in a tie for 24th after firing a 5-over 76 (36-40). Sophomore Christine Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) is tied for 38th with a 7-over 78 and freshman Ashley Rollins (Austin, Texas) is tied for 43rd with an 8-over 79.
Round two of the Regional Challenge will begin at 9 a.m. PT tomorrow morning (Feb. 10) at the par-71, 5,912-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club. The final round of competition is set for Wednesday, Feb. 11. Live stats of the tournament are available at www.golfstat.com.
