COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior Divan Coetzee has been named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. This is the third career player of the week accolade for Coetzee.
Coetzee, a Clanwilliam, South Africa, native, recorded a 2-0 record in singles play and a 1-0 record in doubles play last weekend, helping No. 56 New Mexico to victories over Santa Clara and San Francisco. In the Lobos 6-1 win over Santa Clara, he beat Gernot Fischer at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4. Coetzee also teamed with freshman Hiroud Akhavan to defeat Fischer and Eric Kochanski at No. 2 doubles, 8-2. Against San Francisco, he defeated Pablo Pires de Almeida in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) at the No. 1 position. Coetzee, the 27th-ranked player in the nation, is 23-7 overall (4-1 dual) in singles play and, with Akhavan, is 11-1 overall (4-0 dual) in doubles competition.
