SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The No. 56 New Mexico men’s tennis team went into San Francisco and slayed the Dons, 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. Due to poor conditions, the teams played just the four singles matches necessary for a complete match.
At No. 1 singles, 27th-ranked senior Divan Coetzee continued to dominate his competition downing Pablo Pires de Almeida, 6-0, 6-2. Junior David Kowalski, ranked No. 72, fought back from a 4-6 first set loss to win the next two 6-3, 6-2 over Axel Elvik and remain undefeated at No. 2 singles. Freshman Hiroud Akhavan netted a 7-5, 6-1 win over Mason Fuller at No. 3 while junior Ryan Stotland won 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 over Romain van Rillas.
With the win, the Lobos improve to 3-0 on the season.
New Mexico has the next three weeks off and returns to action at home on Feb. 27 when it hosts regional-rival Boise State.
