Started in 1997-98, the awards are presented to one UNM male and female student-athlete based on leadership, character, determination and commitment to team.

Young and Delich will be recognized during a pregame ceremony on Monday, Feb. 9, when men’s basketball hosts Wyoming. Presenting the awards will be Tow’s wife, Pearl, and Randy Self.

An Albuquerque native and graduate of Manzano High School, Dusty Young was proficient for the Lobos on the field and in the classroom. He was a four-year letterman and graduated in the spring of 2003 with a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.61. Young was a third team All-America at shortstop last year and also a first team Academic All-American. He holds the Lobos’ career record for doubles and ranks in the top-5 in games played, runs, at-bats, hits and RBI. Young also posted a 39-game hitting streak in 2003, the 7th-longest in NCAA history. Dusty is currently playing in the Florida Marlins organization.

Jennifer Delich

A native of Fernie, British Columbia, Jennifer Delich is a senior captain for the UNM ski team and one of the leaders of the Alpine squad. In 2002, Delich earned All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the slalom at the NCAA Championships and she was a member of the Lobos’ national champion women’s slalom team. An Academic All-American in 2002, Delich will graduate this May. She is majoring in Biology and plans to become a physical therapist.

The late Tow Diehm served the University of New Mexico for 40 years, most of that time spent as the head athletics trainer. He was also an athletics administrator and a lobbyist for the department to the New Mexico state legislature. Tow passed away on May 1, 1998.

Leslie Self was the wife of Randy Self, who is the former President of the Lobo Club and owner of Spectator’s Sports Bar and Grille. Leslie also passed away in 1998 after a long battle with cancer.
