ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.– The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team saw a few teammates in the ITA National Rankings released today. Freshman Iva Gersic is ranked No. 83 nationally in singles while sophomore Maja Kovacek is ranked at No. 99. On the doubles front, the duo of Kovacek and Sandy Lukowski are ranked No. 21 nationally. The rankings are determined by the ITA National Ranking Committee.

Newcomer Gersic is UNM’s highest ranked freshman to be recognized this early in the season. The Koprivnica, Croatia native ended the 2003 fall season with an outstanding 11-2 singles record and was ranked seventh in the fall ITA Central Regional singles rankings. This is Gersic’s first national singles ranking. Kovacek was ranked 10th in singles for the ITA Central Regional Rankings.

The joined forces of Kovacek and Lukowski blew away the competition over the fall season. They were ranked No. 1 in the ITA Regional doubles rankings, making them the highest ranked doubles team in University of New Mexico women’s tennis history. The tandem finished the fall with a 10-4 record.

The UNM tennis squad is ranked No. 52 in today’s rankings. Last season, the team finished No. 54 in the national poll.

The Lobo schedule brings 10 teams higher in the rankings. UNM will compete against nationally ranked Northwestern (14), Arizona (26), Oklahoma (35), Colorado (44), San Diego (46), Tulsa (50) and Washington State (51). In addition, the Lobos will face conference foes SDSU (28), UNLV (36) and BYU (45).
