ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – Javin Tindall scored 18 of his 27 points in the
first half and New Mexico pulled away in the second half for an 86-59 win over
New Mexico Highlands Monday night.
Tindall hit four 3-pointers and David Chiotti had his first career
double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in New Mexico’s second win over a
Division II school. The Lobos (2-0) opened the season Saturday with a 95-42 win
over San Francisco State.
Terence Mirabal scored 15 points and Jamaal Weaver 14 for New Mexico
Highlands (0-2). The Cowboys, who lost to New Mexico State (89-69) Saturday,
played the state’s only two Division I schools to open the season.
The Cowboys stayed close in the first half and trailed 34-29 with 2:21 left
in the opening period before New Mexico stretched the lead to 41-31 at
halftime.
An offensive rebound slam dunk by Jamaal Barbee got the Cowboys within 43-37
less than two minutes into the second half, but New Mexico then went on an 11-2
run. Alfred Neale hit a pair of 3-pointers, Chiotti two free throws and Tindall
another 3 and the Lobos’ lead ballooned to 54-39.
In that stretch the Cowboys hit just 3 of 11 shots.
New Mexico, which set a school record by hitting 72 percent of their 3-point
shots against San Francisco State, hit 12 of 27 shots from behind the arc
Monday.
