SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The San Jose State men’s soccer team will stole the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship from New Mexico, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in the finals at Hornet Field on the Sacramento State campus.
New Mexico jumped on the scoreboard first as sophomore midfielder Jeff Rowland headed in a ball from junior defender Jeff Krause’s header. The play started off a corner kick from Stian Eriksen.
San Jose State’s Randy Poggio tried to get the Spartans on the board but couldn’t connect on his first shot in the seventh minute that was saved by junior goalkeeper Andrew Weber. In the 42nd minute, Poggio hit a header wide of the box.
Poggio found the net in the second half, scoring the Spartan’s first goal in the 49th minute on the left side from a Tim McKinney pass. McKinney then scored in the 70th minute as he headed a ball in the net that came off a free kick from Frank Mata. Gonzalez then scored what became the game-winner in the 74th minute from a Poggio.
The Lobos fought back and pulled within one at the 87:47 mark when Patrick Grange scored off a pass from Matt Wootton. It wasn’t enough for New Mexico though, as San Jose State held on for the win.
