Albuquerque, N.M.– The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team completed the first day of the UNM Fall Invite with seven singles wins and seven doubles win.
In flight one singles, freshman Iva Gersic defeated Kat Bushey of Air Force 6-3, 6-2. In the flight two singles, junior Michelle Heidbrink defeated UTEP’s Adi Boykova 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 and senior Tjasa Suvak defeated Fanny Rollet of NMSU 7-5,7-6.
UNM’s Maria Ruiz-Fabrega was victorious in the flight three singles. She defeated Gilat Barlizai of NMSU 6-2, 7-5. In the flight four singles, Tiffany Robertson added the seventh victory for UNM with a win over NMSU’s Sandra Mayr 6-3,6-2.
In flight one doubles, Gersic paired with senior Maria Ruiz-Fabrega and executed an 8-3 win over UTSA’s Paula Erausquin and Barbara Mooney. Gersic and Ruiz-Fabrega then went on to capture an 8-0 win over Isabelle Mignot and Lejla Porobic of NMSU.
Heidbrink and Robertson defeated UTSA’s Tasja Fuhrig and Massiel Martinez 8-1 and NMSU’s Rollet and Nicole Fintell 9-7. Allison Davis and Elisa Bonner captured a win after UTSA’s Erausquin and Mooney retired due to an injury.
In flight two doubles, freshman Nora Quintal and Suvak garnered two wins. They defeated UTEP’s Adi Boykova and Katherine Palider 8-4 as well as NMSU’s Sara Baker and Sam May 8-2.
The women’s tennis UNM Fall Invite will continue on Saturday, 8:00 a.m. at the Lobo Tennis Club. The invite will end on Sunday.
ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championship ResultsUNM’s Sandy Lukowski and Maja Kovacek bowed out of the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championship on Friday, November 7. The duo faced Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush of Northwestern in the quarterfinals. The final score was 8-6.
