The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team lost its fifth straight game tonight with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Air Force. The Lobos (3-8-3, 0-2-0 MPSF) fell behind 2-0 before sophomore Jeff Rowland got a late goal to try to bring the game close in the 82nd minute.
The Lobos seemed to dominate the game, outshooting Air Force, 22-9. However, Flacon goalkeeper Brian Dougal made six saves on the night to keep UNM off the boards most of the game. New Mexico also won the corner kick battle, 8-1, and had more shots-on-goal, 7-2, than the Flacons.
The Lobo defense did a good job of keeping the nations fourth ranked offense at bay, but allowed both of the Falcons scoring chances to fin the back of the net. UNM also kept the nations leading scoring Daniel Wasson from getting into an offensive rhythm. The Falcon sophomore got off just one shot in the game. Unfortunately for UNM, they were not able to keep the other key Air Force players from getting involved.
Air Force’s Colin Eames struck first in the 14th minute when he sent home a cross from Casey Chronister for the 1-0 lead. It was the only shot-on-goal for the Falcons in the opening half. The Falcons extended their 1-0 halftime lead in the 52nd minute when Eames found Marcus Sagastume for the Academy’s second score of the game.
Rowland tried to help UNM mount a comeback when he sent home a Stian Eriksen pass in the 82nd minute for his fourth goal of the year. However, it was too late as UNM extended its winless streak to seven games.
New Mexico travels to Denver on Sunday for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match against the Pioneers at 1:00 p.m. (M.D.T.).
