ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After an exciting first round win over No. 621 Kelly Hyndman on Sunday at the ColemanVision Tennis Championships at Highpoint Sports and Wellness in Albuquerque, UNM tennis star Maja Kovacek fell 6-4, 6-1 to Nicole Sewell (No. 633) of Australia in the second round yesterday. The loss concludes the championship run for Kovacek, but her landmark win in the opening round of the championships will certainly give the sophomore an added boost of confidence in competition this season.

Kovacek and the rest of the Lobo women’s tennis team open up the 2003-04 fall portion of their schedule at the UNLV Fall Invite Sept. 26-28 in Las Vegas, Nev. There, New Mexico will be competing against the likes of UNLV, Alabama, Oklahoma State, San Diego and NAU, all five of which finished the 2003 season ranked in the top-100 nationally.

New Mexico finished the 2002-03 season at No. 54 in the nation. In the Mountain West ranks, the Lobos were third, compiling a 5-2 conference record. Overall, the squad was 15-9, a perfect 8-0 at the Lobo Tennis Club and had three exciting wins over ranked opponents, Kansas (46), Tulsa (53) and CSU-Northridge (75).
