LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s tennis team took the court for the first time this season, competing in the Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. today.
Senior Divan Coetzee, junior Ryan Stotland and freshman Hiroud Akhavan finished the day undefeated. Coetzee defeated New Mexico State’s Spence Peoples, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 32 before downing Texas Tech’s Bojan Szumanski 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16. Stotland beat Texas Tech’s Teddy Diblasi, 6-4, 6-2 followed by Northern Arizona’s Brian Grooms, 6-4, 6-1. Akhavan earned his first collegiate victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win over NMSU’s Luis Avila. Texas Tech’s Rodney Vickers became Akhavan’s next victim, falling 6-1, 6-3.
Also picking up wins in the round of 32 were senior Jasmin Hodzic, junior David Kowalski and sophomores Eric Conklin and Nick Ames.
In doubles action, the duo of Kowalski and Stotland advance to the semifinals tomorrow. They netted an 8-2 win over the Aggies’ Peoples and Jaron Maestas in the round of 16 before downing Texas Tech’s Diblasi and Szumanski, 8-5.
The Lobos return to action in the Aggie Invitational tomorrow. The second day of competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the semifinals of the singles matches followed by the doubles matches at the NMSU Tennis Center.
