ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Sophomore women’s tennis player Maja Kovacek will represent the Lobos at the 2003 ColemanVision Tennis Championships held September 21-28 at Highpoint Sports and Wellness in Albuquerque. Kovacek has earned the coveted wild-card entry into the tournament and will begin competition in the qualifying rounds on Sunday, September 21, against a yet to be determined top-500 player in the world.
Kovacek finished up her 2002 freshman season on the all-MWC singles and doubles teams and compiled a 23-12 singles record and a 21-11 doubles record to lead all Lobo players. The Pula, Croatia native was also deemed the I.T.A. Central Region Rookie of the Year at the conclusion of the 2002 spring season. Most recently, Kovacek earned a No. 97 ranking in the 2003 Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason poll, marking the fourth time the Lobo player has been in the national rankings during her one-year stint at New Mexico.
The ColemanVision Tennis Championships are held each year at the New Mexico Sports and Wellness Highpoint Club. The event is part of the Challenger Tour, an ongoing event that enables young up-and-coming players to improve their skills while participating in competitive matches. Ultimately, the hope is that players will gain exposure and move forward in the tennis world.
