ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – Reynaldo Brathwaite got Brigham Young started withan 89-yard run off a busted play and finished with 169 yards as the Cougarsbeat New Mexico 10-7 on Saturday night.
Brathwaite didn’t score in the game, but his long first-quarter run set up a20-yard field goal by Matt Payne that put the Cougars (2-1, 1-0 Mountain West)in front for good.
With BYU at its own 9, Brathwaite was trapped by several New Mexicodefenders at the Cougars 5. He reversed his field, beat the Lobos to the rightsideline and was run down by Gabriel Fulbright at the New Mexico 2. The Loboskept BYU out of the end zone, and the Cougars settled for Payne’s field goal.
Brathwaite finished off the Lobos (1-2, 0-1 MWC) by completing a 26-yardpass to Toby Christensen with 1:11 left in the game to the New Mexico 10. TheCougars then ran out the clock.
BYU did all its scoring in the first half, with its lone touchdown coming ona 29-yard pass from Matt Berry to tight end Phillip Niu with 6:00 left in thesecond quarter.
New Mexico, unable to sustain drives most of the night – it was 4-of-15 onthird down conversions – scored on a 3-yard run by DonTrell Moore with 4:38left in the third quarter.
That score was set up by a 66-yard catch and run by Lobo receiver AdrianBoyd to the BYU 5-yard line. Boyd took a screen pass from Casey Kelly, thenweaved his way down the field while following his blockers. BYU cornerbackJernaro Gilford finally caught up with Boyd and forced him out of bounds.
Two plays later Moore, who finished with 104 yards on 21 carries, scored.
New Mexico held BYU to three and out on the Cougars’ next possession and theLobos drove from their 17 to the BYU 28. The 13-play, six-minute drive endedthere when BYU’s defense held Boyd a yard short of a first down.
Berry injured his right hand and didn’t play in the second half. Hecompleted 12 of 20 passes for 102 yards and his backup, Todd Mortensen, was7-for-16 for 44 yards.
