ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University of New Mexico announced today the hiring of Brian O’Neill as the third assistant for the highly successful women’s basketball program.

O’Neill comes to UNM after a stint as a men’s basketball assistant at Baylor University under former Lobo head coach Dave Bliss. O’Neill was director of Basketball Operations with UNM’s men’s program during the 1998-99 season before heading to Baylor with Bliss.

Before joining the Lobo men’s program O’Neill was the coach for the Cibola High School boys team from 1992-98. At Cibola the team averaged 20 wins a season and played in two state championship games.

“I am excited to be a part of what I think is one of the best women’s basketball programs in the country,” O’Neill said. “I’m lucky to be associated with Don Flanagan and his staff. I look forward to being a part of what is already an established program with tradition.”

O’Neill was born March 6, 1965, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was all-state tournament performer at Cibola, graduating in 1983. O’Neill played basketball at Navajo Community College in Tsaile, Arizona. He received his bachelor’s degree from Eastern New Mexico in 1988.

O’Neill and his wife, Dawn, have a 5-year-old daughter, Alexis.
