SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After winning all three doubles matches, the No. 52 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team fell at four singles positions to let its 1-0 doubles lead slip away to No. 33 UNLV yesterday at the SDSU Tennis Courts in San Diego. The Runnin’ Rebels defeated the Lobos 4-3, dropping UNM’s record to an even 8-8 mark.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, Maja Kovacek and Sandy Lukowski improved their conference doubles record to 2-0 with an 8-3 win over Paulina Janus and Agnieszka Abram. Maria Ruiz-Fabrega and Rachel Hatley moved to the No. 2 doubles spot against UNLV, after playing and winning at No.3 against San Diego State the day before. The move proved to be beneficial, as the two defeated Tracie Chong and Cindy Treber, 8-5.
In the closest doubles match of the day, Tiffany Robertson and Michelle Heidbrink edged Amy Hadziosmanovic and Gyorgyi Zsiros by a 9-7 margin.
Michelle Heidbrink and Tiffany Robertson were victorious at the No. 4 and 5 singles spots to earn the Lobos two more points. Heidbrink had little trouble against Agnieszka Abram as she went on to defeat her Rebel opponent, 6-3, 6-1. Robertson played Cindy Treber to three sets before securing the win with a 6-0 blanking in the final set for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 victory.
