ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico senior center Jordan Adams scored 25 points, including 15 in the second half to lead the Lobos past BYU, 63-44, in The Pit on Saturday afternoon. With its win UNM (19-8, 9-5 MWC) secured sole possession of second place in the Mountain West Conference and finished with a perfect 7-0 mark at home in conference play. The Lobos held BYU (17-10, 8-6 MWC) to its lowest point total of the season.
New Mexico opened the game with a 24-7 lead and never looked back, keeping the Cougars to only 12 first-half points and 21 percent shooting from field-goal range.
BYU made things interesting to open the second half, using a 14-5 run to cut the Lobo lead to 36-26 at the 12:30 mark. The Cougars eventually whittled the lead down to eight, 47-39, before the Lobos pulled away over the final eight minutes of the game. Junior forward Melissa Forest contributed eight points as New Mexico outscored the Cougars 16-5 down the final stretch.
Adams hit 10-14 from the floor and pulled in three rebounds, while fellow senior Cristal Garcia had 10 in her final regular season home game. Sophomore guard Mandi Moore had a solid all-around game, recording eight points, seven rebounds and 10 assists. BYU guard Erin Thorn led the Cougars with 21 points and hit 3-9 from three-point range.
Adams moved into second place on UNM’s all-time scoring list with her 25 points. For her career, she now has 1,684 points.
In two games this week, the Lobos held their opponents to less than 50 points. New Mexico held Utah to only 48 points in a win Thursday and then 44 for the Cougars today.
With its win, New Mexico will advance to face San Diego State on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. (M.S.T.) in the first round of the MWC Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. aI
