LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 57 UNM women’s tennis team overcame yet another day of rainy conditions in Las Vegas to beat No. 75 CSU-Northridge, 5-2, this afternoon in the third place match of the UNLV Invite. Securing the doubles point for the second straight day, the Lobos (6-3) also won at four of six singles positions to get a win over their second nationally ranked opponent this season.

The No. 1 doubles team of Tjasa Suvak and Maja Kovacek earned their second win of the weekend today against the pair of Tereza Simonyan and Inga Chilinganyan. The Lobo two beat the Matador duo, 8-4. At the No. 3 spot, the tandem of Maria Ruiz-Fabrega and Rachel Hatley blew by YuYu Myintten and Jaclyn Soltyskik, getting an 8-4 win. Sandy Lukowski and Tiffany Robertson were not as fortunate, as they fell 8-6 to Rani Setiawati and Olga Yepremian.

Freshman Maja Kovacek used her winning momentum at the No. 2 spot to defeat the Matador’s Rani Setiawati, 6-2, 7-5. Tiffany Robertson looked to go 3-0 this weekend in singles and was successful. She beat Olga Yepremian, 6-3, 7-6. Michelle Heidbrink controlled the No. 5 position with resounding wins in two sets to beat Brittany Bierman 6-4, 1-6, 6-0.

Maria Ruiz-Fabrega was also an important part of the Lobos’ win. The sophomore defeated YuYu Myintten, 1-6, 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.

At the No. 1 spot Tjasa Suvak fell to Tereza Simonyan, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. CSU-Northridge’s Inga Chilinganyan managed a win over UNM’s No. 3 seeded Sandy Lukowski, 6-4, 6-1, helping the Matadors gain only its second point of the match.

New Mexico returns to home turf next weekend when it hosts New Mexico State at 4 p.m. on March 7 and Tulsa at 11 a.m. on March 9.
