San Diego — New Mexico senior Jordan Adams scored 18 points and hauled down a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Lobos to an important 64-46 victory over San Diego State.
UNM improves to 17-8 overall and 7-5 in the Mountain West Conference. San Diego State drops to 9-15 in all games, 3-9 in conference play.
The win was crucial as the Lobos are now tied with BYU and UNLV for second place in the MWC with two games remaining. Utah (11-1) has already clinched the regular-season title. BYU visits Albuquerque next Saturday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Adams scored six straight points to cap an early 10-0 run that provided the Lobos with a 22-10 cushion. Six more points by Adams pushed UNM’s halftime bulge to 37-20.
Senior Chelsea Grear scored the Lobos’ first seven points of the second half as they built a 44-25 lead. UNM maintained its double-digit advantage the rest of the game.
New Mexico shot extremely well, making 49% (27-55) of its shots overall. After missing all 16 of their 3-point attempts in a 68-45 loss at UNLV on Thursday, the Lobos connected on 5 of 15 against the Aztecs.
UNM held San Diego State to just 29% (16-55) accuracy from the floor. Adams helped the Lobos to a 39-33 rebounding advantage.
Grear added 13 points while fellow senior Cristal Garcia chipped in with 10. Sophomore point guard Mandi Moore contributed 8 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists.
New Mexico closes the regular season at home next week, taking on league-leader Utah on Thursday (7 p.m.) and BYU Saturday afternoon at 2.
