Las Vegas, Nevada — At Cox Pavilion, the University of New Mexico Lobos fell behind early and never recovered in losing a key Mountain West Conference game to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, 68-45.
Despite double figures from both Chelsea Grear and Jordan Adams (11 and 10 points, respectively), New Mexico had a cold-shooting night from the field, while UNLV’s Constance Jinks exploded in the second half to help the Rebels improve their conference record to 6-5, 15-9 overall.
The Lobos also fall to 6-5 in the conference and face another key Mountain West contest with San Diego State Saturday.
The Rebels jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the early going as the Lobos hit only one of their first 13 shots. New Mexico hit 5 of its next 12 shots but still trailed 33-17 at the half. UNLV was a hot 50 percent from the field in the period, connecting on 15-of-30 attempts.
The drought continued for New Mexico in the second half.
Adams scored the Lobos’ first four points, to bring the score to 37-21 but was later saddled with three fouls while Jinks’ hot shooting aided the Rebels to leads of 52-31 and later, 60-36.
The Lobos were 19-of-58 from the floor (33%) for the game and failed to hit a three-pointer (0-for-16). UNLV, meanwhile, went 26-of-54 from the floor for 48 percent.
New Mexico is back in action Saturday in San Diego, Calif., for a game with San Diego State University. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m.
