Comments from University of New Mexico head football coach Rocky Long on the 2003 class:
(General comments) — “We went mostly for freshmen because we have a large number of kids in our junior and senior classes. We certainly feel that we signed some quality young men who will be able to continue building upon what are current players have accomplished. The adundance of freshmen allows us to devlop some younger guys over the next few years. We don’t have to rush them into playing before they’re ready, unless they come along quicker than we think. As is always the case, we hope the three junior college transfers will help us immediately. Our track record with transfers the past few seasons has been very good.”
“We went after a lot of running backs who are all versatile enough athletes to play as defensive backs, too. We probably got one more offensive lineman and one more linebacker than we originally planned, but we signed one less safety than expected. Other than that, our numbers and position breakdown turned out right.
“I think we got good speed in the skill group. That’s the way college football is going, though. Everyone is looking for speed. The only position where size matters in college football is on the offensive line. Defensive linemen are getting smaller and linebackers are getting smaller, but they are getting faster. That’s the way our team is, too.”
(On recruiting after the bowl game) – “I thought we got into a few more homes than we would have had we not gone to a bowl. We were accepted with a lot more of a positive attitude than in previous years. Because of our bowl game everybody knew who we were and what we’d done as a program. We didn’t know it at the time, but having Katie (Hnida) kick added to some of that notoriety. Kids watch so many bowl games so it made our game against UCLA stand out.”
“This is the first year that people did not ask us about a visa or a passport. So, maybe we’re making progress. Seriously, that’s happened every year except this one.”
